Acute Dialysis Water Standards

According to a letter titled “ESRD: State of the Art and Charting the Challenges for the Future” that was sent to the Director of the White House Office of Health Reform, June 5, 2009:

The inflammatory process is an ever-present phenomenon, but is likely enhanced by not using optimal water treatment in the dialysis process. Toxin exposure with our current AAMI water standards is too high in the U.S. as compared to Europe (where ultrapure water is used more commonly for dialysis).”

AAMI guidelines for water in acute dialysis units are being reviewed. It is anticipated that in October, there will be new recommendations for ultrapure water for dialysis treatments in acute units. The thought process is that acute patients are more at risk for infection; therefore the standard AAMI water for dialysis is not sufficient.

The Nehros DSU contains a .005 micron membrane to eliminate bacteria, viral agents, cysts, cungi and biological endotoxins.  The DSU will produce ultrapure water when used post RO/DI.

About Nephros

Nephros is a medical device company headquartered in River Edge, NJ.  Nephros has 2 medical devices awaiting regulatory clearance from the FDA for hemodiafiltration.  They also developed the DSU for water filtration, which was recently approved by the FDA for dialysis.  The DSU is used in filtering biological contaminants from water and bicarbonate concentrate used in hemodialysis procedures because microbial and endotoxin contamination of the water and dialysate concentrate used to prepare dialysate is an ongoing concern in dialysis clinics.

The DSU is being used at several U. S. medical facilities for infection control and has been selected for further development by the U. S. Marine Corps as a purification device for drinking water by soldiers in the field.

Infection Control

Hospital water systems are a significant source of infections.  Purify the water and you will eliminate the waterborne infections and ensure the safety of immune-compromised and at-risk patients.  The Nephros Dual Stage Ultrafilter (DSU) filters to .005 microns; this far exceeds the CDC recommendations of .02 micron bacterial filtration.

Ultrapure dialysate/water

Ultrapure dialysis fluid decreases inflammatory reactions,  improves uremic dyslipidemia and lowers oxidative stress.   The therapy of Ultrapure Dialysate/Water is very real and can be accomplished with Acute and Chronic Dialysis using the Nephros DSU filters.
