June 16th blog up-date

Please note the up-date to my June 16th blog.  My intent, with these blogs, is to educate the healthcare industry about a new product that can reduce infection, saving them money, bad publicity and lawsuits.  By referencing articles in the media, we try and identify real-world situations that can be applied to our product.  Healthy people can fight off most waterborne infections.  A person who’s immune system is compromised has a higher risk of infection.  Any hospital unit or free-standing clinic with immuno-compromised patients needs to be aware of the water these patients are exposed to.

Letter to Healthcare Reform czar

A June 5, 2009 letter titled “ESRD: State of the Art and Charting the Challenges for the Future” shows how dramatic improvements to todays dialysis treatments are possible without new technology or pharmaceuticals.

The 5th point on page 4 of this letter highlights that “toxin exposure with our current AAMI water standards is too high in the U.S. as compared to Europe.”  The Nephros DSU provides ultra pure water when used post RO/DI.  This quality water will decrease the inflammatory process.

Dual Stage Ultrafilters - FDA 510k Approval

On July 1, 2009, Nephros received approval for the DSU to be used to filter biological contaminants from water and bicarbonate concentrate used in hemodialysis procedures.  This dual stage ultrafilter will help dialysis providers address microbial and endotoxin contamination of water and dialysate concentrate.

The filter (product #70-0232D) is ideal for use on individual RO’s being used in acute and home dialysis.  The filters should last about 6 months and they filter particles down to the 0.005 micron level.

Other areas where these filters can be used include

  • The bicarb loop
  • Wall stations - on bicarb and water lines prior to entering the dialysis machine
  • Post RO in chronic units - ensures RO water is filtered to 0.005 microns prior to entering the water loop
