Filters for Drinking Water and Ice Machines.

Direct tap water can contain bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.  Immune compromised patients have a reduced ability to fight off these contaminants.  The Safe Spout Ultrafilter (SSU) is a cold sterilization filter that purifies biologically contaminated water.  The SSU is easily adapted to most sinks and in-line applications (ice machines).  This end point filter provides protection from waterborne infections.  The SSU lasts longer than other point-of-use filters that are currently on the market.

DSU Acceptance in Dialysis

Any new product takes time to be accepted as it goes through a process of testing, validation and implementation.  This often requires a facility to do product research and implement procedural changes.

The Nephros DSU is a new product that has gained a foothold in the dialysis community by living up to it’s claims of endotoxin protection, long life and EPO reduction.   The DSU topic can be followed on the RenalWeb discussion boards.

With cost controls in healthcare and the new reimbursement program for dialysis, innovative products that prove themselves will become the accepted standard in the industry.

Overlooked Sources of Hospital Infections

Medicare has started requiring hospitals to report hospital-acquired infections.  Those that do not, will have 2% of their Medicare payment withheld. This year, hospitals have to reveal their catheter-associated bloodstream infections.  Next year they’ll have to report surgical site infections.  This list will only increase in the future.  Hospitals Face New Pressure To Cut Infection Rates

Many hospitals have focused on catheters, hard surface disinfecting and hand washing to combat HAI’s.  The air in critical areas is usually filtered, however; hospital water supply systems are often overlooked. Numerous studies show the need for filtering hospital water.  Point of Use filters are easier to install and maintain than a whole system filter and are capable of providing biologically pure water.

Reducing Infection Rates

HAIs are the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.  Education and behavior modification, along with new technology, can have a significant impact in reducing HAIs.  Whatever the new procedure or product, it must have proof that it reduces infection rates.

In general, it’s better to re-engineer the system than to try and educate people about it (i.e. it’s better to build cars with seat belts and airbags than trying to tell people to drive more carefully).

The Nephros DSU studies show a reduction in infection rates with the use of this .005 micron ultrafilter.  A number of hospitals have installed these filters and have seen an significant improvement in their HAI rates.

Reduction of EPO Usage in Dialysis

The new reimbursement program for dialysis bundles the EPO reimbursement with the dialysis treatment reimbursement.  Reducing EPO usage helps the dialysis clinic to meet or improve on their treatment costs.  Ultrafiltration of water and dialysate reduces chronic inflammation, which reduces the need for EPO.

But – not all ultrafilters are equal to this task.  The Nephros DSU filters to .005 microns and, when used in the dialysis setting, will last up to a year.  Most other filters are only .02 microns and last about 3 months.

The DSU has been installed in multiple chronic dialysis clinics at the wall box, prior to each dialysis machine.  The DSU is also used in many acute units on their portable RO/DI systems.

Biologically Pure Water for Washing and Drinking

The Nephros Safe Spout ultrafilter (SSU) removes bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites and endotoxins.  This filter is easily installed at the faucet outlet and is a true end-point filter.

Hospital acquired infections and associated costs are on the rise.  The Nephros SSU is an important addition to patient safety initiatives for HAI’s.

Safe Hydrotherapy for Burn Patients

Burn patients are highly susceptible to infections from contaminated hydrotherapy equipment.  Over 60% of gram negative bacteria outbreaks in burn units have been associated with hydrotherapy equipment.  Gram negative bacteremia is associated with over 50% increased risk of mortality in burn patients.

The Nephros DSU is a point-of-use filter that eliminates waterborne pathogens.  The filter can be installed on shower systems, tubs and sinks.  If your unit has specialty showers, we can provide the fittings to adapt them for use with the DSU.

Filter specifications show the DSU will filter your water to .005  microns, which ensures your patients are receiving bacteria-free water.  The DSU should last approximately 90 days, as opposed to other filters (which are .02 microns) that last 1-2 weeks.

Visit our booth (#415) at the American Burn Association meeting next week (March 29 – April 1) in Chicago.

American Burn Association

Please visit us at booth #415 at The American Burn Association meeting in Chicago, March 29 – April 1, 2011.

Burn patients can unknowingly be exposed to waterborne pathogens during their treatment procedures.  The Nephros DSU can filter your water and reduce the chance of infections in these immune-compromised patients.  Studies show how the DSU can reduce your infection rates.

Long Term Bicarbonate Filtering With Nephros DSU

A study was conducted to check the long-term effects on the DSU’s performance on bicarb lines (single station/wall box and central point/bicarb tank).  The results show that the bicarbonate filtration has no significant effect on the filter permeability.

The Nephros DSU is being used in dialysis to reduce endotoxins so clinics can meet the new AAMI standards issued Jan. 26, 2011.  Additionally, cost-savings are being realized through lowered EPO usage.

Studies, installation guidelines and pricing can be found on the Dialysis Page of our website.
